November 2018

Connect – What makes men come alive: 24th November at Southville. A day conference for men who want to feel more alive. A day of worship and inspiration with the founder of Street Pastors UK, Rev Canon Les Isaac OBC and CEO Ascension Trust plus other speakers. Tickets are £7 until the end of the month and there is an option to purchase a pastie for an extra £4. Church Elders:  At the October church meeting it was announced that there will be elections for 2 additional Elders.  This election will take place at a Special Church Meeting on Thursday 22nd November 2018 at 7.30 pm.  The normal November church meeting will follow this special meeting.

In Love and Remembrance Service:  This service will be held on Sunday 18th November at 4 pm.  If you would like a loved one’s name read out please add their name to the list in the foyer. 

Safeguarding:  All leaders and helpers of church organisations must have safeguarding training – this is a legal requirement.  We will be hosting training here next year (Saturday 11 May 2019) but we need to submit names by  15th November.  Would leaders of organisations please let Linda have names by the 15th please

Raising Faith:  ‘Discover God in the Everyday’ Tuesday 13th November at Yeovil Community Church 7.30 pm – 10 pm.  As parents there are many ways you can bring God into family life.  Come and explore how you can help your child find a genuine faith of their own – help them discover God in the everyday.  Tickets £6 (on the door £7). Samaritans Purse:  The Boys’ Brigade are once again supporting the Operation Christmas Child appeal through Samaritans Purse. A small shoebox can have a big impact. What goes into the box is fun, but what comes out of it is eternal. Be a part of changing children’s lives all over the world in Jesus’ name through the power of a simple gift with Operation Christmas Child.  This year we have ready decorated boxes, these are available in the foyer. Please return your boxes on or before Sunday 11th November. 

Church Breakfast: Saturday 10th November at 9 am.  Speaker – Alice Gay from Weston College speaking on ‘Changing Lives’.  Please add your name to the list in the foyer if you would like a breakfast (£5 donation).

Please pray for Linda Lovell: Linda begins her voluntary chaplaincy at The Yeovil Opportunity Group, who work to support families who have children with special needs. Linda will work with them one day/week beginning 6th November.

October 2018

Trip to Uganda: Roger and Chris are returning to Uganda on 31st October with Mission Direct to help lead the last mission trip for 2018. It is both very exciting and a little scary. We have been very busy filling in forms, attending training, meeting volunteers, obtaining visas, ordering malaria tablets and sending and receiving many emails from Uganda. Roger will be responsible for overseeing building work, daily communicating with the builders while Chris will be responsible for spiritual care of the group, daily devotions and reflections / hospitality. Luggage allowance is small but we want to take out little Christmas story books from The Bible Society for each child at the school. These families have so little in the way of possessions, so it would be good to share the story of the birth of Jesus in this small way - a little book to love and treasure. If 20 people each donate £5, 300 books will be paid for. Please pray for us as we prepare to return to Uganda, for wisdom, energy and good health. Chris and Roger

Induction Service:  The induction service of Rev Dave Hibbin will take place on Saturday 27th October at 3 pm followed by refreshments. It would help for catering purposes if you could sign the sheet in the foyer if you are able to attend.  Donations of small cakes would be appreciated.  Please let Linda know if you are able to provide some.

Women’s Day:  Saturday 20th October from 10 am – 4 pm  to be held at Yeovil Baptist Church.  Theme ‘Precious to God’.  

This is an opportunity for women to enjoy time in fellowship with each other in worship, reflection and workshops.  Cost £5 to cover materials.  Tea and coffee will be provided – please bring packed lunch. 

There will be flower arranging and an art workshop plus more dependent on numbers.  Please add your name to the list on the noticeboard by Friday 12 October

The Cross:  One of the last films Billy Graham was featured in which tells of the true meaning of the cross of Christ and the real purpose of why Christ died on the cross. Being shown on 17th October upstairs in the St John’s Schoolrooms from 7 – 9 pm.  Refreshments on arrival. So that they can cover catering, please contact Steve Hart on 426771 or stevehart@capuk.org to let him know you are coming.  It is a 30 minute file.

Coordinator Help:  Currently we do not have any Church Coordinators, the daily Receptionists may at times require assistance with queries etc and so we are compiling a list of people they can call on in an emergency.  If you would be willing to be on this list please let Linda know.  The more people that we can have on the list the better.  If there is anyone who would like to be a Church Coordinator please speak to Linda.

Pensions Manager: The Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Trustee of the Baptist Pension Scheme are seeking a full-time Pensions Manager to oversee the operation of the Scheme.  This is an exciting opportunity to take the Scheme through the next stage of its journey.  There will be opportunity to work alongside the existing Pensions Manager, Mark Hynes, for a transition period.   The ideal candidate would be someone with experience in the pensions field, preferably as a pensions manager, alongside an understanding of the Baptist church family.  The role covers a wide range of financial and legal areas.  Liaison with all of the Trustee’s advisers and service providers is required, as well as providing support to the Trustee, to members and to employers.  We are looking for someone who is able to combine administrative efficiency with inter-personal skills.   Attendance at Trustee meetings and meetings with advisers will be required, typically in London, Birmingham, Didcot and Bristol.  Otherwise it will be possible to work from home, although the option of working at Baptist House in Didcot may be beneficial.  Computer equipment and training will be provided.  The closing date for applications is Monday 10 September and interviews will be held on Thursday 27 September in Didcot.

Special Church Meeting/AGM/Monthly Church Meeting on Thursday 24th May 2018 at 7.30 pm.  It is important that everyone has the opportunity to express their thoughts following Rev Hibbin’s visit, but only church members are permitted to vote.

Visit of Rev Dave Hibbin:  Dave will be returning for a 2nd visit over the weekend of 18th – 20th May.  On Sunday 20th May there will be a ‘bring and share’ lunch followed by a Q and A session in the afternoon before the evening service

Church Breakfast:  Saturday 19th May at 9 am – Valerie and David Reddaway speaking on ‘Hope Now’ in Ukraine.  Please add your name to the list in the foyer if you would like a breakfast (£5).

We are looking for anyone to offer Valerie and David a bed for the Friday evening.  If you are able to offer accommodation, please speak to Keith Andrews (it is only a bed they require).

Funeral Service of Cyril Newbury: This is to take place on Friday 18th May at 1 pm here at Yeovil Baptist Church, followed by committal at the Crem.

BU Assembly:  Saturday 12th May – we remember Heather and Keith Andrews who are representing the church at the BU Assembly at Peterborough on Saturday.

Ascension Service:  Thursday 10th May at 7.30 pm.  We are holding an Ascension service to mark the start of Thy Kingdom Come prayer initiative.  This initiative by the Archbishop of Canterbury is for the period 10th – 20th May (Ascension to Pentecost) and the aim is to pray specifically for individuals we know to come to know Christ.  Please come along and join with us.

Stamps: Chris and Roger will be visiting Baptist House, Didcot with a delivery of used postage stamps week commencing 6th May. If you have any stamps, please leave them in the church office. They also accept albums, loose pages, hinges, tweezers etc.
 

Christian Aid Lunch @ Vicarage Street Methodist Church:

The lunch on Friday 4th May is being prepared by a team from our church. Please come, eat and support Christian Aid. It would be good to have more people from our church supporting this lunch. Christian Aid Week is 13th – 19th May 2018.

Church Elections:  These are to take place at our Church AGM in May.  Nomination packs can be obtained from Linda.  Closing date for nominations is Sunday 29th April.  Those nominated must have been baptised and a church member for 18 months.

Talent show - The GB are holding a talent show in aid of Mind, Cancer Research and Cystic Fibrosis on Tuesday 24 April at 7 pm.  Tickets for adults

£3 / free for children will be on sale from next Sunday 11 March at the parade service and on the night.

Great British QuizSaturday 21st April 7.30 pm.  Raising money for the Mission Direct Zambia Project.  Further information on all these events to follow.

Brigade Camp:  There will be no advance guard this year instead they are hiring a marquee for use as the main tent.  Those going to the camp are fundraising towards the cost of the marquee so hopefully there will be more news about their fundraising events, however if anyone wishes to donate towards this hiring of equipment there will be a collection plate at the end of the service.

March 2018

Art 4 Easter: This has evolved from a vision Chris Redman had about setting up an Art project for Easter during Holy Week (26th – 31st March 2018).  The idea is each church, who wishes to take part, will be given a bible passage and asked to depict the message in any format they wish ie painting, drawing, photograph, poster, stitch-work etc.  The size is approximately 18” x 24”.  The passage we have been given is               Mark 11: v 18.  All pieces of work need to be with Chris Redman by 21st March when one will be chosen and put on display in the old Oswald Bailey shop in the Quedam, the other pieces submitted will be put on display in the church.

There will be a Special Church Meeting on Monday 26th March to discuss and vote on whether Rev Hibbin is invited back for a 2nd preach.

Pastoral Vacancy:  On Palm Sunday, 25th March, Rev Dave Hibbin will be preaching at the morning service.  This is the same day as the Yeovil Half Marathon and therefore the church service will take place at 11 am to allow for the roads to be opened.  Following the service there will be a ‘bring and share’ lunch with Rev Hibbin.

Special Church Meeting: This is to be held on Thursday 22nd March at 7.30 pm when an amendment to the church constitution will be discussed and voted on.  The meeting will continue as the normal monthly church members meeting.

Church Breakfast:  The next church breakfast is on Saturday 17th March at 9 am when Dr John Bradshaw will be speaking on ‘Walking with a God we cannot see’.  Please add your name to the list on the noticeboard if you would like a breakfast.

President of Baptist Union:  We are delighted to welcome Rev Dianne Tidball, President of the Baptist Union, who will be leading our worship on Sunday 4th March in the morning.  Following the service there will be a ‘bring and share’ lunch.  Further details to follow. Due to the Weather conditions this has now been cancelled

Magazine Items: If you have any items for the next edition of the church magazine for March/April, please let a member of the team have them by Monday 4th February.

Special Church Meeting & Church Meeting:  On Thursday 22nd February 2018 we will be holding a Special Church Meeting together with our monthly church meeting at 7.30 pm in the NCL.  The Special Church Meeting is being called to discuss the proposal of the closure of burials at Five Ashes burial ground.  This item was discussed at the January church meeting and a vote to be taken at this meeting.

Unite: Youth Church Youth Groups join together again on the 24th February, more information will be put up about venue and times on Solid Rock's tab.

Funeral Service of Mrs Stella Palmer:  This will take place on Wednesday 28th February 2018 at 11.20 am at the Crematorium followed by a buffet lunch at Johnson Park Sports and Social Club.  Donations in memory of Stella to St Margarets Hospice (family flowers only).

Beetle Drive: Clare Day is organising a Beetle Drive on the 26th January which will start at 7:30pm to help raise money for Mission Direct. Tickets are £3.50 for Adults and £1.50 for Children. There will be a Ploughman's Supper. Please see Clare for more details.

Christmas PuddingsOn Sale Weekly  - The Girls’ Brigade are selling Christmas puddings and other various puddings again this year.  Please see an officer to place your order.

Christmas Angels:  Chris Redman is part of a Yeovil Team from churches across the town and they are delivering a knitted Christmas angel to every house on the new Lufton housing estate as a welcome and offering Gods Blessing to the family moving in, peace and goodwill to all and the love of Jesus at Christmas from the Christian community in Yeovil.  If you are able to knit an angel or 2, please pick up a pattern on the table in the entrance area or see Chris.

Church Christmas Cards: The church’s Christmas cards are now available and are on the table in the foyer.  Please take some and deliver to neighbours and friends inviting them along to our Christmas services and events.  There are envelopes provided.
